Labor Day: Another Public Holiday for the Books

This is a very good year for public holidays!  We had another one, Labor Day, on May 1 this past Wednesday.  Unfortunately my clients do not respect my public holidays so I worked until nearly 2 pm, but then the day picked up considerably after that because Lola and I headed out to the beach with our nanny, Lily.

We went to Repulse Bay, where we met up with our friends and their kid.  We got there just before 3pm, when the sun was blazing and it was extremely hot.  Just a half an hour later, however, and the sun had disappeared and a very cool and refreshing breeze was blowing through, which made it absolutely lovely.

The beach was packed!  We started out a bit far back from the water, but then got closer and that was much better.  Repulse is an easy beach because there is a whole mall with restaurants and shopping and ice cream and the indoors if you need a respite.
But it also has a wide swath of sand (admittedly quite rocky in places) with little playground areas and lots of trees.
I don't see us moving to the south side of the island, but I can definitely understand why many expat families do!

It is about a 20 minute drive from our apartment to the beach, which is really great when you think about it.  We often take for granted the convenience of living in Hong Kong (or, worse, do not take advantage of the ability to reach the beach or the mountains so easily) which I am trying hard to remedy.  We stayed until nearly 5 pm, at which point my friends kindly gave us a ride home.  It was a great day.

Lola mostly wanted to blow bubbles and go up the stairs (on the lifeguard tower) but she was also persuaded to pick up little pebbles and didn't even mind standing on the wet sand to do so.  Lola made a ton of progress, standing on the sand right at the edge of the water and not even getting scared when the cold waves washed over her feet and ankles.  She also walked on the beach barefoot, and even stood on the sand and let the grains get on her feet and between her toes as she picked up pebbles and shells.

I was very proud and, on a whim the next day, picked up a little plastic sand bucket and various digging tools for her at the supermarket.  Maybe we can get her over her hatred of the sand, slowly but surely!
