Happiest of Birthdays to Lola, 5 Years Old

Lola turned 5 on December 1!! She had been looking forward to this day for so long, and I have to say it's hard to believe we have a 5 year old.  I vividly remember like yesterday when she was just born and my absolutely anxiety ridden, sleepless first night when we took her home from the hospital.

On the day of her birthday, we decorated the dining table and area to the nines with a birthday banner, balloons, crowns and tinsel.  It looked like if the Mad Hatter had a tea party in Arendelle.  She had breakfast along with freshly made lemon cupcakes, and opened a lovely princess card from her grandparents, and two incredible presents from her aunties (a clamshell Elsa purse and a purple unicorn dress), to kickstart her special day.
Later in the afternoon she opened her present from us, a huge Barbie doll house. By huge I really mean huge, as it is clear this toy was not designed for Hong Kong apartments.  But it was the specific Barbie dream house she wanted, complete with pool and elevator and hundreds of little and big pieces.
Later that night she got to make a wish and blow out the candles on her lemon cupcakes.
On Friday, the day after her actual birthday, we had the big party.  At her request we invited all of the girls in her class, and then some other close girl friends of hers from extracurricular and other activities.

Every year Michael and I worry about making too big of a thing for Lola's birthday, which may cause her undue anxiety and stress. But then I am also so torn because I know how much she looks forward to her birthday and practically starts counting down from as soon as it happens, and it wars with my deep rooted love of a good party and my hope to make her feel special and cherished.

Lola has always had such a strong personality and knows what she likes, which I confess makes party planning so very extra fun.  The theme is always very clear, if you know what I mean!  We have been watching The Worst Witch, the Netflix show, and reading the books that spawned the series, and Lola is all about Mildred Hubble, cats, magic and broomsticks and potions.

The party venue decorated with broomsticks and banners, and entertained the kids with a "potions class" that entailed 3 different science experiments (done out of beakers and witches cauldrons).  The party entertainers even came dressed as witches.  I ordered from Taobao two images I pulled from the internet, one of Miss Cackle and Miss Hardbroom, the other of the three girls, Mildred, Maude and Enid.  We had a fantastic facepainter, a coloring and tattoo station, an amazing magician, and a two tiered chocolate and strawberry cake.
Before the party started:

The fantastic magic show and hamming it up:
And finally, cake time:
Happy Birthday Lola, we love you!

*This post is overdue, 14 days overdue to be exact, and for that I blame mobile Blogger, because I had the most amazing post minutes from publication and then the whole thing crashed. Grrrr.
