A Catch Up Post: CNY Party, Coronavirus, One Month Check Up

Things have changed drastically in Hong Kong in a week.  Just last Thursday, Lola was dressed up in her beautiful new red Chinese dress, gifted to us by a very sweet friend, attending a party with her Highgate classmates at Mount Austin park.

In the week since, the number of people infected by this virus and the death toll has climbed steadily and scarily.  The Hong Kong education bureau has now suspended classes until March 2, which has left schools and parents scrambling.  The US has stopped flights to China (which, for now, does not include Hong Kong or Taiwan).  One of the big supermarkets near us ran out of rice yesterday.  All disinfectant wipes and alcohol based hand sanitizer is sold out.  Today when I went online to try to buy diapers and groceries, I could not get home delivery - it simply was not available as an option.

It is not an ideal time to have a toddler and newborn twins at home.

We continue to be very careful about hand hygiene in particular, but try not to be alarmist at this point - although the numbers and projections are frightening.  Lola is still going outside and to Maggie and Rose and we just went to the American Club today.  She has been the only person at Maggie and Rose the last three times she has gone.  We noticed a significantly smaller number of people in the kids play area at the club when we went today.   All of the wonderful extracurricular activities I just posted about have been canceled or put on hold while we brace to hear what comes next.

Al and Teo had their one month checkup on the 29th.  Getting ready to go to the doctor:

Central, the business district of Hong Kong, was eerily empty and very quiet.  We all wore masks into the clinic and found the place entirely empty but for the receptionist, pediatrician, and two nurses.

The boys are doing very well but for the diaper rash which continues to plague us.  The doctor confirmed that they are now 3.9kg (Al) and 3.89kg (Teo), far surpassing their birth weights.  Their heads are in the 90th percentile, and their body weight and length are in the 25th percentile.  These numbers are a little misleading because it's measured against the single baby and the doctor assumed they were full term, but overall the figures are very satisfactory.

For now, Al is the champion sleeper.  He eats and sleeps and wakes to eat again.  Once he's asleep it's hard to wake him up and even if you nudge him, he keeps his eyes shut and just smiles.  (That should tell you who's who in the picture above!) He only cries when he is getting his diaper changed, getting bathed, or when he is hungry.  Then he really lets loose his displeasure and cries very angrily and loudly!

Teo does not cry much, but he is not as good of a sleeper.  For a couple of nights last week he just laid awake after he ate, looking around nonstop for nearly three hours.  His eyes just kept circling and he refused to rest!  He will also often make grunting noises or sounds of protest, as if trying to communicate.  In this, we think he is much like Lola.  Similar to Lola, Teo's very first toy is also this little white lamb with bells!  When he didn't want to sleep, we let him play with this little toy by tying it to his crib.  Teo really enjoyed batting it around with his little hand.
